Creating ‘Between Storms’
The first time I woke up in an igloo it was a dark gray dawn. A light snow was coming down outside, the frozen equivalent of Seattle winter drizzle. Disappointed, I closed my eyes. When they opened again, a shock ran through me. Through the open ice door, out beyond the snow-laden trees, the sky reflected intense color. There was only one thing nearby that could throw colored light at that angle–the volcano on who’s slopes I was camping.
In the early 1990’s I began a tradition of greeting the new year on the the slopes of Mt. Rainer. What began in tents evolved into snow caves and culminated in the nine foot long igloo you see here, built single handedly in seven hours of careful work.
Weather and light of every kind has greeted me on these snow camps–blizzard conditions to topple you over, pouring rain, and wind chills well below zero. On that morning, a sliver of sky opened between storms at the precise moment the sun cracked the edge of the earth.
I tore open my sleeping bag and jumped into coat and pants, only to find my boot laces so frozen I could not tie them. Brute force prevailed and I dashed outside, snapping a warm battery into the camera ( I sleep with the spares ).
Outside, trees blocked my view. No time for snowshoes. Camera in one hand and a ski pole in the other, I sprinted along the path I’d taken the day before, using the firmer snowshoe prints to keep me on the top of the snow. It didn’t work. Down I went to my hip, and up went the camera to keep it from the snow. It must have looked like a snow-shark attack, the man going down, waving his camera above with one hand for help. Churning legs and ski pole leverage freed me, and I was off again. Step, step, step, crump! Down I went and up went the camera. Finally in view of the mountain, I stamped a quick platform for stability, and breathed deeply to calm my heart which was beating so hard it shook the viewfinder.
I don’t know how many people were on the mountain that morning to see this dawn. Given the hour and the storms passing through, likely not many.
The print of Between Storms leaps off the page.
