Lily Pair
Lily Pair
Hurricane Ridge, Olympic Mountains, USA
A foggy dawn without wind. It’s cool without being cold, and smells like melting snow. I like to wander out on the side ridges away from the trails on mornings like this. As spring progresses up the mountain, these flowers are among the first to appear, growing up along the edges of the melting snow banks. Close examination reveals that there had been wind earlier, before dawn. Only lilies in sheltered areas still hold their cloud-mist water droplets. So delicate is the water’s hold that walking alone is enough to cause a miniature shower at each footstep. Setting up for the image is a slow, careful process of advancing the tripod inch by inch.
It’s so quiet that I can hear a deer chewing nearby. She steps into view, head down, either unaware of me, or ignoring me. Apparently Avalanche Lilies are very tasty. As I continue to work, the doe continues to feed. Her only acknowledgement of my presence is a twitch of a ear as the shutter snaps.
