Creating ‘Storm-break’
In late January a series of powerful winter storms dumped record snows on the Grand Canyon. With another storm bound for the area, I packed my gear and flew south. In Phoenix, I tucked my gear into a solid Jeep Wrangler and sped north, racing the the latest storm for the canyon.
That night at the El Tovar, I watched the wind blow and the snow come down as I made tea for the thermoses. A few hours before dawn I drove out. I’ve never seen Grand Canyon Village so quiet. I don’t think the breakfast cooks were even up. The Jeep made easy work of the eight inches of snow on the road. Driving out in pristine snow is nearly as good as skiing or snowshoeing fresh powder.
Powell point is an ideal place for snowy conditions. It has wonderful trees, interesting foregrounds, and even a stone structure that is handy to step behind in windy conditions to change lenses or warm up.
I had the area to myself until nearly lunch time, and was heading back to the Jeep when the first eager faces showed up to see what the snow had made of the rim. Storm-break tells many stories, from detail of the shelving Kaibab Formation cliffs, to the mysterious depths of the Vishnu Basement Rocks. The splash of gold light and ragged shadow across the canyon interior reminds me how fast clouds were moving. Near where this image was made, I found fox tracks which passed over my own pre-dawn footprints. They say that in the cliffs of of New Zealand’s Fiordland are best in the rain, and they are right. In the same way, the Grand Canyon is at its best in winter snow.
