Twilight Hammer

Twilight Hammer
Bryce National Park, Utah

Looking in

After sunset, when people have gone back to the lodge for a hot dinner, I remain, for in twilight I am often inspired. The only sounds are the breeze sighing through the pine tree beside me, and the occasional bird call from the valley as they talk about their day before turning in. There is only you and the place, and more often than not, the place will show you scenes few others have witnessed. This is important because in a place like Bryce finding stories is easy, but photographing them is not.

The landscape is so incredible that it can fool the eye and heart into believing that wild shape and incredible color is enough. The photographer must resist the temptation to create images which simply document the land’s shape and color. A good photograph tells multiple stories that the viewer can only learn through multiple viewings. This requires layers of meaning, and depth of emotion.
