Imagine
Bryce National Park, Utah
A world of its own
I have seen unreal landscapes, colors that defy capture in places unique on the planet. Most have some kind of analog, something to compare them to, other mountains, other red rock. But Bryce Canyon does not. It defies comparison. On my first evening on site I heard a woman with a distinct Southern twang comment with heartfelt sentiment, “This is better than the Grand Canyon.” My first reaction was disbelief. How can you compare them? You might as well compare tree bark to a computer. The two places are that different. Yet, the longer I stayed, the more the woman’s comment would come to mind.
It is a place that sparks the imagination. Every view is so full of possible stories, it is nearly impossible to pick just one out of the cornucopia of light and shape. Is this a faery city? A goblin city? An alien world? A valley on Mars before the planet lost its water? Is it Middle Earth? I can hear the singing of the elves, or is that simply the echo of birdsong? Do you feel the peace of the morning, and the sun’s warmth pushing back the crisp winter air? Imagine.
