Sunfire
Arriving late in the afternoon, I didn’t expect much at Bryce. Driving into the the first overlook, I grabbed a thermos of tea and my lunch and wandered out to the view to find a suitable spot to eat. I took in the valley with a long look, and poured a cup of tea. This piece didn’t occur to me until I was half way through my sandwich. I set down the food, staring into the scene.
Reflected light is a mainstay of desert photography, red rock in particular. At Bryce the formations are so close to one another that the light bounces and rebounds with an intensity of multiplied color unique in my experience.
The time it takes for a new place to settle into my consciousness varies. At Bryce it was half a sandwich. After that moment I was photographing until dark. I never did finish eating.
