The Tree, the Bush, and the Rock

Long ago there was a cedar tree who sprouted where trees were forbidden to grow. Many spirits were unhappy with the little cedar, growing where it had no right to be. “There is no soil,” they said. “There is no water,” they said. “You cannot live here, for this is the home of Rock. It is not a place for trees.”

But the cedar liked the view, and sent it’s roots deep into the rock. Wind roared and twisted the cedar, but it held fast to the stone. Sun baked and burned, but the the cedar drank from deep cracks. Deer were sent to eat its precious leaves, but the cedar made more. After countless years, the cedar became whirled and bent, but remained always reaching for the sky. One day it noticed a bush growing beside it. “Careful,” said the tree. “The spirits do not like for us to grow up here.”

The bush nestled into the soil beside the tree, and replied, “There is one spirit that does not mind.”

“Who is that?” asked the cedar.

“Rock,” said the bush. “Look at how it catches the dust of the wind to make soil, how it holds water deep under the hottest sun, and how it has gathered around you for company. Rock is your friend, cedar, and it has made a place for you.”

Cedar saw that this was true, and thanked the rock for all of its gifts, but rock was silent, for that is its way.

And so they were, the Tree, the Bush, and the Rock, together for many, many years.
