Dragon in the Grass
Mt. Borradaile, Arnhemland, Australia
Character
As a boy I kept box turtles, beautiful little land-turtles with high domed shells about six inches long. They would come tromping over from every corner of their outdoor enclosure when I approached. What fascinated me most was the individual personality of each turtle. There were shy turtles who hid from everything, greedy turtles that would drop food already in their mouth to snap the food out of the mouth of another, and gentle turtles with no fear that would eat a grasshopper from your fingers with delicate dignity.
Watching crocodiles for hours a day, one begins to get a sense of them as individuals. This one, for example gave a sense of alert, powerful, prime condition, and aggressive, possibly hungry character. This is the kind of croc that would drop food to steal from another. And yet, for a grasshopper, this is merely the local landscape, rolling hills of crocodile hide.
