The Stone in the Stream

The Rock in the Stream
Carbon River Trail, Mt. Rainier, USA

On the northwest flank of Mt. Rainier, the Carbon River leads to the lowest elevation glacier in the continental US. On the day this image was made, I watched a boulder the size of a car bounce down the glacier’s snout. It struck the moraine rocks in front of the ice like a bomb going off. Rock fragments rained down across a hundred yard area, splashing in the river and clattering across the rocky landscape. Note to self: Never step in front of a moving glacier.

Later that afternoon I found this cheerful stream along the little-used trail on the north side of the river. The moment I saw the stone in the stream I knew I’d found the portfolio image of the day.
