Creating ‘Baker Icefall’
This image shows a spectacular icefall on Coleman Glacier as well as the north face of Mt. Baker.
Year to year changes in glaciers can be hard to to detect, except in icefalls, where the shifting, melting spires present a different aspect each season. While making this image a chunk of ice cascaded from the upper mountain, shattering and flowing down from ledge to ledge. Ten seconds later I caught the rumbling echo of its fall.
Nearby, a marmot lay basking in the sun. These guys know how to bask. Until you get too close. Then the alarm is sounded…before basking resumes.
